Four entry concepts of LED display

1. LED concepts and types

LED, or Light Emitting Diode, is a tiny electronic semiconductor that converts electrical energy into visible light. The type of chemical used in an LED determines its color, brightness and power. There is no filament in the LED lamp, so there will be no burning or damage of the incandescent filament.

LEDs come in two different forms, surface mount and in-line packages. Surface mount refers to how the LED lead frame is mounted. The LED lamp beads are mounted on the surface of the circuit board. SMD contains red, green and blue chips. In-line LEDs are connected to the board by leads and are located higher. Each LED lamp bead is a red, green and blue monochromatic lamp bead.

Because there is no directional reflector cup, the light emitted by the surface mount LED lamp bead is not focused. Instead, the light is spread evenly across horizontal and vertical angles, providing a wider viewing angle. This makes surface mount LED displays ideal for most indoor applications as well as some close-pitch outdoor applications.

Surface mount LED display advantages:

Excellent color mixing performance for close viewing;

No color shift at extreme angles;

Wide viewing angle.

2. In-line DIP

The in-line LED light uses a reflector cup and epoxy lens assembly. This combination, along with the type of chip used, determines the elliptical viewing cone. The reflector cup of the in-line LED concentrates the light to a specific angle area.

In-line LED display advantages:

Optimized for long-distance viewing;

higher contrast in sunlight;

Black matte reduces reflections;

Brighter than surface mounts.

3. LED screen indicators

1. Modules

LED modules are the “building blocks” that make up the video wall. The arrangement of modules depends on the product, market and application.

2. Pixels

Pixel is the abbreviation of image element, which is the basic point of light that forms letters, numbers, graphics, and videos. A pixel can be a single LED, multiple LEDs of the same color, or multiple LEDs of different colors. They are the smallest elements that make up an electronic display system and can be independently controlled or switched on and off at different brightness levels.

3. Resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels within the physical area of an electronic display. The greater the number of pixels per unit area, the stronger the ability to display details. Resolution is determined by display size, pixel technology, pixel pitch, and viewing distance. The following is a comparison of the effects of three different point spacings:

The full-color display has different dot pitches, clear and different contrasts

4. Viewing angle

When choosing a display, consider the location and angle at which it will be installed. The best image is obtained within the viewing frustum of the display, so it is best to place where the viewer is likely to be looking within the viewing frustum.

Viewing angle effect comparison

The viewing angle or viewing area is larger than the optimal viewing angle, depending on site conditions and ambient light.

5. Viewing distance

The calculation of viewing distance is mainly based on the type of indoor and outdoor display and the distance from the display. Each display has a minimum and maximum viewing distance, based on application and usage considerations.

Larger characters will have longer viewing distances, smaller ones will be shorter. Pixel pitch also varies between indoor and outdoor applications.
